Understand this area of law
Debt enquiries can involve money owed to a person or business, a demand received, enforcement of a judgment or broader financial difficulty. State whether you are seeking or responding to payment, the location of the parties and whether a court or insolvency document has arrived. Avoid placing account details or personal financial information in a public search.
Define the work before comparing firms
Ask whether the firm acts for creditors, debtors or both and whether it handles the amount, jurisdiction and process involved. A letter, negotiation, court claim, statutory demand and insolvency advice are distinct pieces of work. Confirm what the firm proposes to do first and what cost or recovery assumptions sit behind that proposal.
Prepare a safer, more useful first enquiry
Collect the agreement, invoices, payment history, demands and formal documents, and make a concise chronology. Communicate court dates or response periods promptly. Ask about alternatives, enforcement practicality, possible cost exposure and whether a financial counsellor, insolvency practitioner or another specialist should also be involved.
Work that may sit within this category
Use these examples to describe the enquiry, not to diagnose the legal issue or assume that every law firm performs the work.
- Recovering unpaid invoices or a contractual debt
- Responding to a demand or court claim
- Enforcing a judgment
- A statutory demand, insolvency concern or repayment negotiation
Information to organise before making contact
- The agreement, invoices and payment history
- Demands, responses, court documents or insolvency notices
- The practical recovery objective and information about the other party
Court and insolvency documents can carry short response periods. Give the complete document—not only its heading—to a qualified adviser promptly.
Take to the conversation
Three questions for a lawyer
- Does the law firm act for my side and handle this debt process and amount?
- Is there a court, insolvency or response date requiring immediate attention?
- What is the first proposed step, its cost and the practical recovery objective?
