Define the work before comparing firms
Ask whether the proposed work is advice, negotiation, document preparation, dispute resolution or representation. Confirm who would be responsible, which jurisdiction is relevant and whether any urgent or protective issue changes the intake process. An area-of-law label does not establish specialist accreditation, availability or that a firm has agreed to act.
Prepare a safer, more useful first enquiry
Prepare a short chronology, list the documents you already have and note the outcome or decision you need help understanding. Ask the office how conflicts, privacy, costs and communications are handled before sending sensitive material. Government-funded and community services may also be available; eligibility and the assistance offered must be checked directly.
