Begin with the decision waiting for you
A useful enquiry describes the point you have reached: a document to understand, an arrangement to make or a question that needs advice. Avoid promising a neat legal label if you do not know it. Explain what you have received and when a response is expected. The firm can then tell you what further information it needs to consider the work.
Ask what the first stage will produce
An explanation, a written assessment, a revised draft and representation are different kinds of work. Ask the firm to describe the proposed first deliverable and the question it is intended to address. There may be good reasons why the work cannot be fixed immediately. What matters is understanding the assumptions and how the scope will be clarified, not demanding certainty that nobody can responsibly offer.
Make the boundaries explicit
Ask what is excluded, which tasks remain with you and when another adviser may be needed. Find out how further work is approved and charged. A conversation about a matter is not itself proof that a practice has accepted instructions. Keep the firm's written engagement information and seek clarification if it differs from what you understood.
Finish with a usable next step
Before sending documents, verify the recipient and agree a secure channel. Confirm who will contact whom, what material is required and when to raise a timing concern.
